No more round towns

Every town of Felucca used to be a circle. Now each is built from rectangular districts in a shape of its own: crossroads towns, street villages, twin towns joined by a causeway, cities stepping down to a river.

Until now every town of Felucca was laid out the same way: a disc of streets around a square, walled towns inside an octagon. Square tiles can't draw a circle, and from the air every town looked like the next. So towns are now built from districts: rectangular blocks of streets put together in a shape that fits where the town stands.

Plans of eight towns: a planned capital, two twin cities, a stepped city, a city stretched along a lakeshore, a crossroads town, a street town and a fort

Shapes

A town at a crossing of roads grows arms along them. A village on a road becomes a street village, its houses lined up along the way; others gather round a long green or in a cluster of blocks. Some cities step diagonally down a slope; others are twin towns, an old town and a new one with a square of its own, joined by a causeway across the gap. A capital is a planned core with quarters grown on around it. Each town tries a dozen variants and keeps the one that fits its ground best, so a town by the sea or a lake bends around the water instead of running into it.

Kargard, a twin city: its market square by the temple's graveyard

Streets

Every district has its own streets: its own block depths and its own cross streets, so the grids of two quarters don't line up, and a main street runs along the border between them. As before, every house fronts south or east, towards you. The core holds the main square and, in the big cities, the market.

Lumium, a street town: its square between two canals

Walls

Walls follow the outline of the districts, with straight runs and cut corners where the stone walls turn, and a gate on the nearest stretch of wall wherever a road arrives. Palisades keep their square corners.

Fort Torungrad: crenellated walls, a gate with torches, a tower and barracks in the yard

Numbers

The world now has 3294 buildings in its 268 settlements, about 600 more than before, and more of the temples, inns and manors each town must have found a place: 12 are still missing, 91 were before.
